Posted By not2needy 6 months, 4 weeks ago in Arts & EntertainmentElizabeth Barrett is to all appearances your standard 17-month-old girl, complete with wisps of gossamer hair so blond it's almost white and the unsteady gait that is the definition of a toddler. As her parents and two other adults talk earnestly around her, she paws through a couple of large-format children's books on a table, blissfully unaware o

This happened on the TODAY show Monday in New York. Elizabeth wasn't showing off or performing, this sort of thing being old hat to her. Way back when she was 13 months old, she read her first word, says her mother, Katy Barrett of Lubbock, Texas.
There are 2 videos attached to the article, please watch this kid, she is amazing!

What an adorable child! OMG, I couldn't believe what I was seeing! She certainly knows her own mind, lol. Mom & Dad are going to have a handful, I think. She's smarter than they are, lol.

My son was 16 months old when I first became aware he was able to read. We had taken him to Traveltown, an area of LA's Griffith Park where they have relics of past and present transportation, He ran up under the wing of an antique jet and began to read the call letters off the wing. Now we had made NO attempt to teach him letters.
This was my first clue he was special. Just before he was two, we pulled into a McDonald's parking lot. They were running a promotion with Ford, and had a big banner across the front of the building advertising it. As we pulled into the parking area, he announced, "Ford!"
I was stunned. It was a "Little man Tate" moment. There was no Ford logo on the banner. There were just block letters. Clearly, he was reading the banner.
By the time he had turned four, they tested him and let him into kindergarten. On Columbus day, they held a show and tell. He read a middle school book on Columbus to the class. They promoted him to first grade.

He graduated at 16. Could have jumped ahead of that intellectually, but the social consequences of such are inescapable.
I post this not to brag, but instead to share if others have a Little Man (or Lady) Tate on their hands. It's quite a blessing, but one heck of a parenting challenge as well. Feel free to private message me if you are just starting down the stream in the same boat.

I do some volunteer work teaching adults how to read. The grown men that I help have various degrees of difficulty grasping the concept of letters that can be read and pronounced into words when strung together. This little girl makes it look so easy that I marvel at how differently human beings are put together that a 17 month old girl can easily do what adult men have great difficulty grasping.

The Barretts were joined by Susan Schwartz, a clinical director at the Institute for Learning and Academic Achievement at the New York University Child Study Center, who agreed that Elizabeth's extraordinary abilities have a lot to do with genetics.
