Posted by: Radiofreeeuropa 6 months, 1 week agoThis book chronicles American history through the stories of the individuals and movements that dreamed of a better future and then took action to make that dream a reality, arguing that the much heralded American spirit was not born as a gift of our founding, but was forged through our adversity and triumphs.

From colonial revolutionaries to abolitionists, labor organizers to suffragists, progressives to civil rights activists, it was individuals and movements who dared to go against the status quo that both guarded and created our best national self. I thought this was particularly interesting as nay sayers criticize Senator Obama. History indicates those who provide a sense of hope have always been Americas best and most effective leaders. "Movements" have defined our nation since it's inception.

The men who made America great are the ones who used their freedom to achieve their greatest individual potential. The injustice and atrocities of slavery and segregation are valid topics for discussion. Beyond that, however, this book is pretty much a love letter to the collectivists of this country who sought to control the creators, innovators, and anyone who dared profit through consensual trade.
"Hope" and "change" are the big buzzwords right now, and it's easy to see why. They are powerful, appealing, and above all, vague. Same with the term "progressive". If anything, the use of government force against the individual right to profit and prosper is ANTI-progress.

Movements almost always needs a catalyst or a smoking gun to spark the tidal wave of change.

Sounds like a fascinating book and reminder of what was, is and what could be.It reminds me of day dreams I have about leaders of huge change and studies i've done that they were human. They got discouraged, feared failure, despaired yet never gave up and many times gave their lives. This article comes at a good time for me because like I've mentioned here on this site many times I dream big of a civil society and discussion of opposing views. I needed the boost. The battering I've taken this week is discouraging.
Thanks for the boost Radio. Outside of internet circles my nickname is the "gentle giant" but this reminds me it's been hard throughout history for larger people than me.
As for Obama I don't know.It shows a general movement of peoples desire for change. I've been calculating "issues" only and not concepts. But now I wonder. I don't think any great leader for change knew the exact details and am now wondering if Obama is such a person.

he was smart enough to know that lobbyists and their influence is a huge problem
can u imagine the courage it took to limit contributions to 2300 bucks? i mean at the time he didnt know that ovr a MILLION indivduals would come out to support him 20 and 50 bucks here and there
anyway my point is when u r calculating issues i think he deserves an A for reform

Obama may just be capitalizing on this country's problems and is spouting "change" just like every other democrat before him. I will reserve judgment until I have had time to witness the form of change that would take place when he is elected. I just don't trust a man who is a friend of organized crime. His neighbor is a mob Don and he is tight with "king" Richard Daley. Sorry folks but Chicagoans are well aware of his associations.

Thanks RFE! This book seems quite interesting...All confused chapters.( although lot of progress must be done: it is by not leaving anybody on side that Society progresses!).America has always been THE right example! Unity is the strength...(Do you remember "one for all, all for one"? LOL). Seriously, Obama seems to be an excellent leader: future will say it to us!

Dare to hope! Martin Luther King did and was killed. Privately, I think our government was behind this assassination. He was becoming way too popular and his following was growing by leaps and bounds on a daily basis. Too fast for the elitists to counter effectively. That is a recipe for disaster to a government hell bent on controlling the masses.

Sorry I am color blind. I see a person of the male gender running for president.
MLK's legacy does live on, but at a far lesser extent than if he were not killed. This country may well have become united again under his legacy.
Who now carries his torch? The Jessie Jacksons, Al Sharpton, Lou Faraquan. Racists!

HOPE! Where? I hear an awful lot of people saying "we can't do anything" or "our vote doesn't count" or asking "What can I do; I'm just one person and we will never get everybody to do it" and other defeatist attitudes. Hope fades away and despair takes its place when throughout a lifetime we witness the destruction of liberty and self responsibility in favor of a 'Nanny state'. Sorry folks, I look forward to 2012 and hope those who predict it to be the end are correct. The human race would be a cancer on the universe because too many good people do nothing to stop the evil!
