Excerpt from Fred Kaplan's new book, which argues that the failures in Bush's foreign and military policy stem from two great misconceptions: that the world changed after Sept. 11, when it didn't, and that the United States emerged from the Cold War stronger than before, when in fact it was weaker.

It is hard to be impressed by an article that uses so many words, just to say what we all know - BushCo is clueless.

Interesting article. I tried to remember the Presidents in my lifetime and divvy them. The only realists I could come up with were Bush I, Clinton, and possibly (way back when) Nixon. Bush II has to be at the head of the fanasist group, though there are others. Reagan, Jimmy Carter, and LBJ come to mind.

In the US, we tend to be suspicious of the realist type; we are often dogmatic and resent those who are not--think France in the international community. Don't know where all of this leads though. I would've thought that realism is a necessary component of any foreign policy. Maybe that's the writer's point--that you can't have a successful foreign policy without it.

As I look out there, candidate-wise, there don't seem to me too many realist types in sight. Perhaps an early warning?

What to expect from it all. One could hope for a healthy dose of self examination among the body public resulting in a gain for the school of the Realists. But I suppose to expect such would demonstrate a dangerous streak of Fantasist. :)

Good containment comments... Eisenhower said that containment would eventually see the Soviet Union collapse on itself... just shows the failures of Condi to learn from History, and her PHD is a demonstrated piece of crapola!
