The cartoonist made Mad magazine truly mad for over 30 years. »
Posted by: Radiofreeeuropa 8 months, 1 week agoBack in the early 1960s, any young boulevardier between the ages of 10 and 15 knew that the greatest publication in all the world was Mad magazine. Oh, Sick and Cracked might have their aficionados, but for the true connoisseur of humor and satire these Mad wannabes functioned largely as backups, temporary palliatives to tide one over until next mo

I bought "Don Martin Steps Out" but I'm sure that it has gone the way of my old baseball cards. "Spy vs. Spy". Ha! Always imaginative and ingenious. God, those were the days! And yes, "Mad" was the publication (cheap).:-)

Radiofreeeuropa---BTW, after reading about Don Martin, and after commenting, I then went to "Amazon" and ordered a used copy of "Don Martin Steps Out". I just want to enjoy it again as I only remember that it was clever and funny as hell. I'm looking forward to its arrival. :-)

Me too... fond memories with Mad magazine. Great traveling lit for the car on long trips. WE used to take them when gas was affordable and no one knew that we were destroying the environment.

Every now and again I wish I had a copy of "Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions" for reference!

I still use Fester Bestertester as an alias every now and then. And I always try and drum up a good rant for National Gorilla Suit Day. It was invented by the Gorilla Suit Manufacturers just to sell suits, you know.
I think the last issue of MAD I bought was the first one they let advertising into, though, sometime around 2000. Wonder what Sergio Aragones is doing now that the Weekly World News has folded?

Martin did some science fiction (!) drawings (in that same style) for the old 1950's and 1960's "flats," Galaxy and If, truly far out.
Highbrow alert-
Don Martin got a lot off of the surrealist Wilfredo Lam and the abstract surrealist Matta. Duh?
Contentious section-
I think Wally Wood is probably the finest artist that Mad ever had, a hold over from the old EC comics (Tales from the Crypt, Weird Science) days.
MAD smarts and laughs will probably never be equaled, *sigh*.
Colbert seems about the closest, but Stewart gets distinctly anti-art sometimes. Bad Johnny!
Classic MAD represents a high point in American education and culture.
You're makin' me get teary...

Yeah, Wally Wood was the greatest. Evidently he hated being called Wally--he preferred the highbrow Wallace.

I thought of that exact same Nat Lampoon Issue, and the terrified Dog's expression: Classic Political Incorrectness. Those were the good old halcyon days of parody.
My favorite Mad parody was "I Am Curious, But Yellow" Based upon I Am Curious: Yellow.
I still use that sound bite and it sadly still silences a room, since no one else remembers!

I do! loved the parodies! I still use the pseudonym HORACE SMEDLEY from time to time. I recall a great issue with bogus window stickers... As for Lampoon... dogfishing in America...Son-o-God funnies....Zimmerman ( It's a hard....) beat the meatles all too funny and yes that was the golden age of satire.

MAD Magazine cartoons were always hilarious, especially the Don Martin and Spy Vs. Spy cartoons. My favorite Don Martin strip was one about superheroes, and the one where Clark Kent goes and gets 'contact lenses' and Lois Lane goes, 'Oh, my God! Clark Kent! You're Superman!'
Yes, the Animal Rights group did get huffy with National Lampoon's stunt - And I think one of the DC Comics series also paid tribute to that cover with one saying to buy the issue or they would kill this cat.
I also loved how MAD Parodied everything from Al Capone gangster films to television. I even have a MAD Grooves CD which was a collection of MAD Parody songs from some of their albums.
Yes, Don Martin and all the Usual Gang of Idiots are great, no wonder Matt Groening likes to give tributes to them in The Simpsons and Futurama.
What?! Me Worry?!
