Profile Picture for engineer

Hi My background is Biomedical engineering with an MBA As you know from all my comments where I almost stand politically. I have loads of other things I am interested in such diversified subjects as classical music, playing piano, cooking, art, bowling, swimming,of course, politics and the economy, etc. I have taught business, SAT, Electronics, and Chinese cooking. Unfortunately, I have no website. Someday I'll set one up. Basically, I am interested in any subject which you can talk about. I am now in the recruiting and job placement business

I would like to "nudge" the discussion of this whole newly-coalescing discussion group in more PRACTICAL, TECHNOLOGICAL directions (REDUCING the emphasis on the vagaries of "politics" --- which, if you happened to catch my recent "auf Deutsch" post(s) in the "discussions" department of this operation, you will perhaps understand why I regard as being rather frivolous and essentially non-essential in this season of real national economic breakdown).

Folks are blathering about TRIVIA of the day (what some "politician" said on "Press the Meat", or who greased whose palm horse-trading Obamas old senate seat, etc., etc.), as those THOSE sorts of things actually matter.
Keep re-arranging those deck chairs long enough, and they will all simply float away!

I would like to see a TECHNOLOGICAL discussion of the whole subject of ALTERNATIVE ENERGY matters --- and not merely "in the abstract", BUT TOGETHER WITH OPEN, HARD-BOILED CONSIDERATION OF WHAT THE INTERACTIONS WITH WITH "THE ECONOMY" will ACTUALLY be!

For instance, if initiatives in the direction of the Chevy VOLT "mini-locomotive" alternative, which would (and should) quickly be coupled with regenerative braking technology (to about DOUBLE the range of the battery!) are adopted (which would CERTAINLY be worthwhile by way of achieving FOREIGN OIL INDEPENDENCE), then what would be the implication of "cutting out" perhaps seven-eights (half of three-fourths --- you do the math) of gasoline purchases for automobiles --- not to mention all the make-work eliminated by getting rid of all those expensive TRANSMISSIONS and related drive-train subsystems (there being, of course, NO TRANSMISSION IN A DIESEL-ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE!). And of course that inevitably ALSO suggests cashiering out about three fourths of all those FILLING STATIONS we see on every street corner (and so then where will prople go to buy all their CIGARETTES and LOTTERY TICKETS, etc., etc.,??) ... You get the idea.

It seems to me that if such a group as this is going to "get into" the sort of "political" subjects as those to which it evidently aspires THEN IT NEEDS TO ACTUALLY THINK THROUGH PRACTICAL REALITIES! So now, HOW CAN WE REDIRECT ALL THOSE PEOPLE "OPERATING" ALL THOSE FILLING STATIONS TO AT LEAST EQUALLY WELL-PAYING JOBS DOING GENUINELY USEFUL FUNCTIONS THAT WOULD ARISE IN THE "NEW DISPENSATION" OF THINGS??!

See what you can do to provoke some thought along PRACTICAL lines!

Fellow Engineer (MSEE [ABD]), old-hand computer jock.

    You get my gist ---
